Mohawk in Men: Hair Style and Hair Cut

The Mahican and Mohawk tribes used to wear the Mohawk hair style. There were many tribes in the Great Lakes region, that in times of war they would pluck out their hair all except for a narrow strip down the middle of their scalp.

This single cut in the middle style is a very popular style in men today and is known as Mohawk. However in the times of the American Indians it was known as a scalp lock. There were times that the Indians would leave their hair the natural color black other times they would color it faded orange/yellow to look like a sunset.

As the story goes, Native Americans would use buffalo grease to spike their hairs before going into battle. Punks today go out and spike their Mohawks with soap, egg whites, hair spray, and at times even glue. It is said this look became popular after it was seen on the famous guy. There are many different kinds of Mohawks as well as different names for them which are liberty spikes, fans, tri-hawks, death hawks, etc.

Types of Mohawks hairstyles

• The name liberty spike is given this name because of the statue of liberty that it is to remember the spikes of the top of the head of the statue of liberty.
• Fanned Mohawk spread creating a fan effect.
• Tri-hawks are when a person has three Mohawk on their head, one in the middle and one on each side.
• Deathhawks are wider than average Mohawks. Deathhawks are usually used by rockers, gangsters and Goths.

Tips for Hairstyling Mohawks

Mohawk is not always easy to take care of. Below are a few tips that might help you to keep your Mohawk spiked and styled:

• Knox Gelatin: This stuff works perfect for maybe a week but be warned it does stink and will tend to attract flies if you get it wet because it is pure protein.
• Some people also use Elmers glue this works on people with fine hair. But tends to get a little messy so I would suggest using this as a last resort.
• Hairspray is best for fanning it is easiest cheapest and looks great. Stuff like white rain and freeze frame work best.
• Eggwhites: the one problem with egg whites is that they stink so be sure to not uses them without adding a little hair spray to them as well. The way to use the egg whites is to make a whole in the egg with a knife or something but not a big hole just a little one to let the clear egg white come out but if you star to see the yolk come out stop never use the yolk.
