What is Pompholyx?

Pompholyx is a form of eczema it is also called as Dyshidrotic eczema which is characterized by pruritic vesicular eruption. It is mostly appears on the fingers, palms, and soles. This kind of eczema i.e. pompholyx is mostly occur in the hands of the women. Some time it occurs only in the feet or otherwise in both hand as well as feet. In this disease some blisters are occur which causes to the itching and after some time when it become dry and gets cracked it is very painful.

Causes of Pompholyx

The perfect cause of pompholyx is not known but it may occur because of the following reasons-
• Because of stress
• It may occur because of certain skin disorder like atopic dermatitis
• Some allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever may also responsible for this disease.
• exposure to metal salts
• Ingestion of allergens like chromate, neomycin, quinoline, or nickel may be responsiblr for this disease.

Symptoms of Pompholyx

• small, itchy bumps
• Cracks or grooves on fingers and toes
• Increases pain when blisters increases and cracked

Treatment of Pompholyx

• high-strength topical steroids and cold compresses are the first line treatment for Pompholyx
• Topical khellin and natural sunlight therapy is useful for recalcitrant palmoplantar pompholyx.
• Corticosteroid creams or ointments like clobetasol propionate are useful in improving the appearance of blisters.
• Wet or cold compresses are useful in reducing blisters.
• Some anti-itching medications like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or loratadine (Claritin) are helpful in reducing itching.
• Botulinum toxin injections are approved for the treatment of Pompholyx.
• Ultraviolet light therapy is useful to make skin receptive.
