How to Perm your Hair?A perm is a process of waving the hair by modifying the internal structure of the keratin. In order to obtain a wave that lasts for a long period or stays permanent, it is necessary to modify the internal structure of the keratin in the hair. Once the internal structure of the hair is modified, the hair becomes pliable, elastic and can be moulded in any desired form. Then by reversing the process and using certain chemicals, the bridges are reformed in other places thus fixing the new form given to the hair. The process by which the bridges are severed varies according to the type of perm. Perms are of several types: Hot perms, Cold perms, Tepid perms and Home perms. Among these, hot perms and cold perms are popular. Hot Perms It is old type of perm which was in use until 1945-50. In this process, the hair is moistened with a liquid (sulphites and ammonia) which has no effect on the hair when used cold. The hair are then wound on curls or pin curls, and then covered with a cap, and finally heated to a temperature of about 200 degrees. Under the action of heat, the chemicals severe the bridges and the hair then take the wound form. The hair is then dried and cooled, so that the new bridges are formed in other places. The whole process is carried out at room temperature. |
